You Are What You Eat!
Updated: Nov 6, 2019
You can only be as healthy as the food that fuels you.
Think about the times when you felt lethargic after eating junk food or the times you felt bursting with energy after switching to a healthier diet. Just as how food affects us, I believe the same nutritional principles hold true for our furry companions.
After we switched our Jack Russel (Jojo) from home cooked meals to a raw diet, her energy levels increased and she itched significantly lesser.
Several studies have shown that diets rich in certain vitamins and minerals can improve quality of life. For example, diets with higher levels of antioxidants and DHA have a positive effect on cognitive function for both cats and dogs of all life stages.
Take a brief look at these two case studies.
Case Study 1
48 Beagles, 8 weeks old
Study duration: 10 months ++
Diet enriched with DHA
Case Study 2
16 Cats, Diagnosed with Osteoarthritis
Study duration: 10 weeks
Diets enriched with EPA & DHA
Mobility, less stiffness
Many pet owners do not see the importance of changing their companion’s current diet.
I have been feeding this diet for X number of years with no issues.
I already buy the best that the pet stores/vet recommends.
I have a fussy eater.
I have no time.
Sadly, our furry companions are at the losing end as it is often a waiting game for disease to occur before stubborn pet owners are willing to consider change.
I hope that after sharing about the importance diet and how nutrition plays into overall health and well being, you will join us on this journey to discover a diet and health plan that works best for your furry companion and yourself.
Up next, what makes a good diet and key nutritional percentages to consider when choosing the right diet, stay tuned!
Until next time, keep your tails wagging.
If your companion suffers from joint issues, it would benefit with more chondroitin into their diet.
E.g. Green lipped mussels are an excellent source of chondroitin and glucosamine to help build, maintain and repair cartilage.
